It's also easy to start with minimal investment: even if you only have enough money for two months' worth of inventory, you can still get started right away.

58. Start a furniture business ($124K/month)
The furniture industry involves the design, manufacture, and sale of various types of furniture for household and commercial purposes. With the increase in flexible workspaces and the growth of the real estate industry, the demand of the furniture business has also boosted in recent times.
According to a consumer survey, millennials are now the largest furniture buying demographic. In fact, young consumers are willing to buy picture-perfect unique furniture items where they are willing to pay extra for the perfect design but not only they expect free delivery but they also want quick delivery.
The furniture business is easy to start and does not require high investments. However, it is first important to know your niche for example office, domestic or home furniture or luxury items.
The business owner should set up a manufacturing unit, purchase the tools and machinery, and hire skilled staff to design and create the final product. The owner will also require the business license and registration depending on the number of employees hired at the manufacturing unit and the size of the business.
There are several factors that need to be considered before starting a furniture business, for example:
- The raw materials: Furniture can be created using variety of materials like metal, plastic, rattan, wood, and even silver. The most preferred is the wood furniture. Wood is strong, durable and usually, one lengthy plank of wood can create one piece of furniture.
- Gathering local clients: It is important the a small business should first go local in order to understand the expenses. In order to avoid huge transportation and delivery expenses, the local clients will be more profitable.
- Social media following: Business owners can use social media marketing to promote their business and also become more aware of their target audience.
- Logo and branding: Creating a unique brand and logo helps you connect with customers emotionally and promote recognition.
- Shipping rates and inventory management
The furniture business needs a lot of preparation and prior knowledge. It is advisable to take business classes, learn about your local market, and make a solid business plan. In general, if your products are unique and one of a kind, consumers will be willing to pay a higher, including the shipping cost.
However, if your products are similar to other retail sellers, the competition will be higher, this is when the business owners should set up the discounts and low shipping rates in order to attract more customers.
Sasha Weekes started Timber Grove Studios, a woodworking business, about 5 years ago:
My name is Sasha Weekes and I’m the 25 years old owner of Timber Grove Studios. Our home-based woodshop is nestled in the hills of PEI’s countryside, and we specialize in decorative shelving and home decor with a focus on minimalist design and simplicity. Each piece is made to order with 20+ color options, meaning it will be the perfect fit for each customer's space. We ship Canada and U.S. wide.
Etsy has been the main platform since starting up, although I finally have a standalone website up and running as well which I hope to grow in order to diversify sales channels. I have no current employees, although I have a wonderful subcontractor who works from home to cut and stain wood for me. She’s paid by the piece so it’s a great system for both of us. My partner Mario works full time but has recently joined me on the side and we’ve released a new line of steel table bases together which has been a ton of fun - he is an awesome welder.
After launching in 2017 and being skeptical about making sales of large items online, I was absolutely proved wrong! The business outgrew our small condo basement within 7 months and outgrew the garage/basement of our next rental home in 7 months as well. We’re now happily settled with a detached shop and garage, meaning there’s some room to grow (for now!) and space to begin stocking up on items for the Christmas rush before summer ends.
Moving twice in two years has definitely caused organizational, financial and opportunity hiccups, but the business has grown steadily regardless so we’re very excited about where 2020 will take us. We’ve learned what to focus on during which months, as revenue can range anywhere from $2000 during slow months to $10,000 during high months. Net profit has run anywhere between 20-50% throughout the life of the business and varies month to month. It’s closer to 20% right now as we’ve been spending all we can on new tools and materials for our new larger products and our Christmas stock.
59. Start a bedding company ($452K/month)
At the end of a hard day, what we all need is a good night's sleep. A good quality mattress or bedsheet or pillow makes all the difference when it comes to sleeping comfortably. That's why so many people invest in quality bedding materials making it a profitable business idea to invest in.
The first step to starting a bedding business is to choose your niche. You need to decide what type of bedding you want to specialize in, which will help determine the kinds of products you'll be selling. Do you want to focus on luxury sheets? Or perhaps more affordable linens that are still high-quality?
Next, you'll need to find a manufacturer who can supply the bedding products you want to sell. You'll want to research different options and make sure they're capable of providing what you need at a reasonable price.
Once you've got all that lined up, start setting up your website and social media accounts! These are essential tools for any business owner—especially in today's digital landscape.

I had become a misfit in the corporate world and needed to follow my own path. The first two years were -- I assure you -- almost all blood, sweat, and tears; but now, in our third year, we are off to the races: in the first six months of the year our vodkas became available in 23 states, and by the end of the year we should be in 40, and in important chain stores such as Total Wine and WalMart. Just to put that into context, that type of growth usually takes 4 years.

Not a lot, but the main goal here is to build a sustainable brand, allowing people who want to dip their toes into the world of design by providing little design elements that will add quality artsy atmosphere into their space.
As a designer and an innovator, my image thrives on self-improvement and creating the best version of myself. I aspire to reach the heights that I set for myself because I believe that I compete with myself. I’ve also focused a lot on self-discovery in terms of finding ways to realize my full potential and what I could do with it. 74. Start a weighted blankets brand ($239K/month)
Elizabeth Grojean started Baloo Living, a weighted blankets brand, over 4 years ago:
Baloo Living is asleep and wellness company launched from Bali in 2018. Our signature product is a weighted blanket, an incredible tool for calming the nervous system with gentle pressure, similar to the way being hugged or held makes us feel naturally comforted. These blankets have been used for decades by therapists and are only now going mainstream as people discover just how powerful they can be for improving sleep and soothing anxiety--without the use of medication.
It’s exciting to be bringing a product to market that does so much good and only beginning to reach critical mass. The market for weighted blankets is exploding - currently, on Amazon, there are millions of dollars in sales monthly, and we know that e-commerce generally represents 10% of retail sales in the US. We reached six figures in our third month, and seven figures after our first holiday season before even a year has passed! Baloo took off like crazy, partly because we stand for the highest product quality, customer service, and thoughtful design.

As one that has always been very aware of the importance of CLEAN HANDS, I firmly believed from the outset that this concept had legs, in that if I could provide a nice looking dispenser that looked at home in all environments, hold a good number of antibacterial wipes at a reasonable cost, it had to add value to both the club, office or workspace, for it enhances the overall perception of cleanliness within the organization. It puts hand and surface wipes easily within reach of both staff and members leaving NO room for excuses - convenience improving compliance!

We created an elastic Apple Watch band and started making them by hand on my Nana’s sewing machine. We have since scaled the business from an original $20 upfront for materials to $100K a month on Shopify. No other capital or investment was ever put into the business.
